Experience
Dr Mike Layton is a highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with extensive expertise in the assessment and treatment of complex neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions. He has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist across both the NHS and independent healthcare sectors since 2008, delivering specialist psychiatric care to adolescents and adults with a wide range of complex mental health and developmental needs.
Qualifications
Dr Layton’s specialist consultant qualification is in Psychiatry of Learning Disability, and his clinical practice focuses particularly on supporting individuals with complex presentations involving neurodevelopmental disorders, cognitive differences, and associated psychiatric conditions. He is recognised for his thoughtful, highly individualised approach to assessment and treatment, combining diagnostic precision with compassionate, person-centred care.
Specialisms
A significant area of Dr Layton’s expertise lies in the assessment and management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Conditions in adolescents and adults, including comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and tailored treatment planning. He also provides specialist support for individuals presenting with complex neuropsychiatric conditions, often working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated and holistic care.
Leadership
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Layton has held several senior leadership roles within healthcare organisations. His previous appointments include Clinical Advisor to the Board of The Aurora Group and Medical Director for Priory Wales, where he provided strategic clinical oversight and leadership across specialist services.
Tribunals
Dr Layton has also served as a Medical Member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal and the Social Entitlement Chamber Tribunal, contributing specialist psychiatric expertise to important legal and statutory decision-making processes.
Medicolegal
Alongside his clinical and leadership responsibilities, Dr Layton has substantial experience in medicolegal practice, with particular expertise in the Court of Protection. He is a committee member of the Cymru Court of Protection Practitioners’ Association. He has provided expert evidence in a number of significant reported cases, reflecting his respected standing within this specialist area of practice.
