Expertise
Dr Alicia Stringfellow is an experienced mental health nurse and nurse academic. She has held senior roles both within the NHS as a Clinical Nurse Manager, and as a Senior Lecturer and Professional Head of Mental Health and Children’s Nursing at Cardiff University. Alicia’s extensive experience in mental health includes working in high security forensic settings, and includes a range of adult inpatient and community mental health settings. With 30 years of experience working with people of all backgrounds, she has helped countless individuals to manage and overcome a range of mental health difficulties.
Specialism
Alicia has a particular interest in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the assessment, management and ongoing monitoring of this, as well as an interest in severe and enduring mental health conditions, working closely not only with the patient, but where appropriate, with their families and carers. Alicia is an experienced Behavioural Family Therapist and Behavioural Family Therapy Trainer and Supervisor.
Influence
Alicia has also made significant contributions to the advancement of mental health nursing on an international level. She has served as the International Lead for the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPN), supporting global collaboration, professional development, and the exchange of best practice across mental health nursing communities worldwide. Through this role, she has championed the importance of international partnership, knowledge-sharing, and innovation in the delivery of high-quality mental health care.
Leadership
In addition, Alicia has held the position of Chair of the ISPN Membership Committee, where she led initiatives to strengthen professional engagement, expand membership, and foster a supportive and inclusive professional network for mental health nurses. Her leadership within international professional organisations reflects her ongoing commitment to advancing standards of care, supporting the nursing workforce, and shaping the future of mental health practice both nationally and globally.
Insight
Alicia holds a Doctorate in Advanced Healthcare Practice, with her doctoral research focusing on the experiences of mothers caring for a child with psychosis. Her research explored the emotional, relational, and practical challenges faced by families navigating severe mental illness, providing valuable insight into the importance of compassionate, family-centred approaches to mental health care. This academic work continues to inform her clinical practice, reinforcing her commitment to understanding the wider impact of mental health difficulties and supporting both individuals and those closest to them.

Alicia is also highly experienced in healthcare leadership, professional development, and the supervision of healthcare professionals across a range of clinical and academic settings.

As Director of Governance for Independent Talking Therapies, Alicia oversees the systems and standards that help ensure the service is safe, effective, ethical, and patient-centred. Her role includes leading on clinical governance, quality improvement, risk management, safeguarding, policy development, and regulatory compliance, helping to ensure that everyone who accesses the service receives high-quality care.
